The Desire to Work Here, There or Anywhere, Even Outside the U.S.

How Has Working Remotely Evolved and What Does It Mean in a Post-COVID World?

One of the lingering impacts of the pandemic is how it has changed the way employers and employees view working remotely.  Employees are increasingly pushing the boundaries of what working remotely means, including becoming “location independent” and working from anywhere in the world.

Many remote work policies are narrowly defined as “working from home” and do not account for global mobility and working cross-border. The desire to become location independent brings forth a multitude of questions and considerations for employers and employees, such as health insurance coverage, safety, tax and payroll implications, and more.

The good news is that there are some actions you can take now to support your members who are considering the expat life.

Understanding Your Options: International Student Health Plans and the ACA

1.1 M international college students in the U.S.ACA-compliant plans are not always a fit for international students. In most cases, international (inbound) students are exempt from provisions that are outlined in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), including the tax penalties for individuals who don’t maintain a healthcare plan, commonly referred to as the “individual mandate.”

For Blue Plans, this provides an opportunity to tap into the colleges and universities in your local market with plans specifically designed for the unique needs of international students.

Heard at Summit:
"I saw a great opportunity to collaborate with the team at BCBS Global to create one unified view of Blue Cross Blue Shield, so it wasn’t about a silo. It was about what value can we bring together for an organization, a Fortune 180 company like Sherwin Williams, that’s unified, simplified, and curated; really driven to deliver results…It was easy. We had a willing and able partner to collaborate and work together."
